Environmental Hazards in the Laundry Room
Posted by jonaberNov 11
What do you usually find in a laundry room? Of course, you’ll find dirty clothes, laundry soaps and detergents, bleaching solutions, fabric softeners, washing machines, and dryers. Let us look at some of these. Dirty clothes that are kept unwashed for long may harbor some mites, molds, and mildew which can harm your lungs and cause allergies. Bleaching solutions contain chlorine which can cause skin and eye irritations and even cancer. When chlorine mixes with the dirt in the clothes, airborne toxic, organic chemicals are generated, clothes dryers are possible sources of carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is a toxic gas which, at high concentration, can kill a person in a few minutes.
After washing, the water mixed with the bleaching solutions, fabric softeners, dissolved soaps and detergents all go to the drainage. When the drainage system is defective, these mixtures of chemicals reach the soil, underground water, farms and fields, all of which result in toxic contamination.
